Computer Ergonomics for a better work environment

In my job, we used to be very individualistic and interact very little with our co-workers. Then one day, the managers decided to apply workplace ergonomics and a correct computer posture. The effect workplace ergonomics had was as positive in our health as in our interaction with our fellow co-workers, allowing us to be for the first time as a family. Our managers had always been very nice people. Empowerment and motivation had always been key elements in our organization. Then, one day, a secretary called in sick. She said she had terrible hand pain.

She went to the doctor and they diagnosed her with finger arthritis. A condition that develops when the cartilage between two joints wears away, making the movement of fingers very painful and in developed stages may inhibit the movement. The doctors associated it with the fact that she had been for over 15 years, typing in a computer for her job, in a way that had caused her to develop this condition. They explained to her the importance of applying workplace ergonomics. Her case altered our managers who had always cared a lot for the workers and our quality of life at work. They decided to start applying workplace ergonomics.

They knew that by applying workplace ergonomics, they would also make themselves a favor by saving all that money in incapacitations. They modified our desks, chair and computers so we could have good workplace ergonomics that would take care of our muscles and joints that become affected by sitting down and typing all day long. They also made us all take training in workplace ergonomics, which was fun and allowed a lot of interaction between coworkers that had never taken place before. Workplace ergonomics has a lot to do with the equipment, but it has a lot to do with the user as well. This is why they hired a group of experts to take a training course in how to apply workplace ergonomics correctly. This was a very fun couple of days. They explained everything from theoretically and physically with images what happens to your body if you don’t apply workplace ergonomics.

They also made examples using us as models. They brought a workplace ergonomics approved desk, chair and computer and showed us the right position of the body, the arms, hands and fingers; how to move them and position them so they wouldn’t be affected by our jobs. This allowed us to laugh and have a little fun and to get to know coworkers we never had known before. Also, by applying workplace ergonomics, we now move around the office more and we take time to say hello to each other while we stretch our legs, arms, shoulders, back and hands.
